The Canon Digital Learning Center just launched a new feature called “Lens of the Month.” The articles highlight different photographers and lenses throughout the year, and my interview comes up next! This month features the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L II. Read the article with Jeffrey Lau on this magnificent wide-angle lens. I rarely shoot wide-angle, but I did love the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L USM when I shot at the Eastern State Penitentiary. After reading Jeffrey’s interview, I may have to give the 16-35mm a try.
Stay tuned for my interview next month on the Canon Digital Learning Center. I tested the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM and LOVED it–so much, that it became a permanent fixture in my lens kit. I will create a gallery that showcases some of my work with the 100 mm before the article hits. Show some love when you read the interview.

hi amy, cool … will definitely check this resource
. do you also use the 100 mm lens for fashion/portraits? thanks
Wow, Amy, congratulations on the Canon interview! Like I always say, “good exposure not only helps one’s photos, but it can help the photographer, too!”. I’ll be sure to pass the link to your interview when it comes out on to some of my friends (you know who I’m talking about). -Steve
Congratulation with Canon interview. I don’t shoot Canon anymore but would still read your interviews. lol
Thanks for the support!
Wolfgang, I absolutely use the 100 mm macro for portraits, but you have to know when to use them. I go in depth about that in the interview, but in a nutshell, you may have a little distortion, and make sure the model has FLAWLESS skin. The lens is so super-sharp, it’ll pick up every little pore. It’s a great lens for dudes and 3/4 portraits on women (where you pull back a little and don’t concentrate on the face). Check out the article, I give much more detailed feedback and show examples of my experience.
I know I promised you some feedback on the 24-70 mm (still in queue). I’ve used that lens more often for my fashion work *lately.* I have three primary lenses:
1. Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM
2. Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM
3. Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM
I looooove the first two lenses and am finally getting acquainted with and learning to appreciate the 24-70 mm. My desire now is to find a lens that combines the 24-70 mm and the 70-200 mm without sacrificing quality. Good glass is always important, a lesson I learned the hard way.
Steve, I don’t know how you found me, but I’m glad you did. I appreciate your support more than I can express in a tiny follow-up blog comment.
Thanks, Charles! LOL
thanks amy
… did you ever try the Canon EF 85mm 1:1.8 USM? my absolute favourite lens when i shoot portraits. i love it
don’t know how it performs on the 5dmk2.
Hi, again! Yes, I own and like the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM. I also love its counterpart, the Canon EF 85mm f1.2L II USM. Talk about sweet fall-off, and yes, they work beautifully with the 5D Mark II.
I know the 85 mm is highly regarded, but it doesn’t really fit in with my workflow for two reasons:
1. I rarely use primes because it’s just “one more thing to pack;” and
2. I like to get up close and personal, but anything less than a 135 mm gets some wicked distortion.
But then again, I only used it once or twice, so maybe I didn’t give it a fair chance. Thanks for reminding me about this lens…I totally forgot I had it!
LoL, congrats Amy! I just now noticed the middle pic in there and thought that looks like Amy’s work… Then I saw then lens tags in the upper right corners.. hehe I hope Canon appreciates all this pimping you’re doing for them! I’m digging parts of the 5D2, but I still won’t defect. I will keep it around, and thanks for the lens suggestions.
Congrats Amy
I´ll be waiting to see the learning resource article!
As a Nikon shooter if there´s something to envy you Canon shooters is these sweet f/4 L lenses…
We don´t have those…
Kinda tempting to defect you know… I don´t need no f/2.8 zoom lens (much less for 1700 bucks… hey i shoot in the third world
)
Whats up with those Canon IT guys! Its 6 days into August already and they’re still stuck on July! Just another reason tor me to be grumpy with them! Sorry just venting as I did my first real shoot with my 5D2 and it was challenging working the AF system in low light. I want the new Photographer of the month!
