As I mentioned in a previous post, I made it my mission to shoot on location for the majority of 2009. Or, as I exclaimed, “No more seamless background!” My friend, Nikolai, told me about this place in Pennsylvania with amazing waterfalls, and I had to try shooting there. We traveled three hours away from New York City, and it’s remarkable how much the scenery changes. It rained a little, but that did not deter the crew or the model, Dani–what a great attitude! The model I originally booked for this shoot completely flaked, so having Dani’s wonderful energy made it all worth it.

I like overcast days because colors tend to pop. I considered bringing my Alien Bee, but the accompanying Vagabond battery weighs the equivalent of a small child. Imagine having to carry cumbersome and heavy equipment down slick, wet mud and perilous rocks downhill for three miles. No, thanks! Instead, I relied on my trusted old reflector and brought a small diffuser for good measure.

After testing the light and my muted “Blue Steel” impression,

I give some direction to the model. “Stand there and sparkle.” (Don’t I look like a crazy, eccentric old kook here?)

After a full day of shooting, this picture stood out:

P.S. I didn’t really wear that Matthew Williamson top all day. I just wanted to demonstrate how colors popped on an overcast day.
